AI Prompts for Students

Studying, essays, and exam prep โ€” using AI to learn faster, not to skip learning.

The students who get the most from AI use it as a tutor, not a shortcut. The difference is in the prompt: ask it to teach, test, and challenge you, and it will. Ask it to do the work, and you'll pass the assignment and fail the exam.

1. Explain it like you're teaching it

The single best study prompt: "Explain [topic] as if I'm a smart 15-year-old, then ask me three questions about it." The explanation builds understanding; the questions test it. If you can't answer them, ask for a simpler explanation and try again.

2. Essay outlines, not essays

Ask for a thesis, three arguments with one piece of evidence each, and the strongest counterargument. Then you write the essay. An outline prompt makes your thinking better; an essay prompt makes your submission dishonest and your understanding zero.

3. Practice exams with answer keys

Feed the AI your topic list and ask for 10 mixed questions โ€” multiple choice, short answer, and one essay question โ€” with an answer key and one-line explanations. Take it closed-book. The explanations after are where the learning happens.

4. Flashcards from your notes

Paste your notes and ask for question-answer flashcard pairs, one concept per card. Twenty good cards beat a hundred pages of re-reading: retrieval practice is the most proven study method there is, and this prompt automates making the deck.

The rule for all of it

Use AI to understand, then prove it without AI. If you can't explain it with the laptop closed, you haven't learned it yet โ€” you've just watched someone else do it.

Try them now. The Learning section has ready-made prompts for studying, quizzes, and flashcards โ€” run them free in your browser.
