How to Write Better ChatGPT Prompts (5 Rules That Actually Work)

Most bad AI answers aren't the model's fault. They're vague prompts. Five rules fix 90% of it.

If you've ever typed a question into ChatGPT and gotten a generic, useless answer, the problem usually isn't the AI — it's the prompt. A good prompt does five things. Here's each one, with a before-and-after so you can see the difference.

1. Be specific about the outcome

"Write about marketing" could mean anything: a tweet, a textbook, a sales page. The AI guesses, and guesses wrong. Name the deliverable, the length, and the audience.

✗ Before: "Write about email marketing."

✓ After: "Write a 150-word email to small bakery owners announcing a weekend croissant special. Friendly tone, one clear call to action."

2. Give context, not just instructions

The AI can't read your mind. Tell it who the reader is, what you're trying to achieve, and any constraints (budget, tone, format). Two sentences of context routinely double the quality of the answer.

3. Assign a role

"Act as a senior copywriter" or "Act as a patient math tutor" changes the voice, the vocabulary, and the structure of the answer. Roles are the cheapest quality upgrade in prompting.

4. Show the format you want

Don't hope for a good structure — ask for it. "Give me 5 options as a bullet list," "Output a table with these columns," or "End with a one-sentence summary" removes all the guesswork.

5. Iterate — don't settle for the first draft

Your first prompt is a starting point, not a verdict. Follow up with "make it shorter," "give me a bolder version," or "rewrite the second paragraph for beginners." The best AI output usually comes from the second or third message, not the first.
