AI Prompts for Job Seekers

Resumes, cover letters, and interview prep — the job-search tasks where a good prompt is worth an hour.

Applying for jobs is a volume game with a quality filter: you need many tailored applications, and each one has to sound like a human who actually wants that job. These are the prompt types that do both.

1. Tailored resumes

Paste the job description and your experience, then ask the AI to rewrite your bullets to match the posting's language — same facts, their keywords. Never let it invent jobs, skills, or dates you don't have. Recruiters and hiring managers check, and one invented credential ends the conversation.

2. Cover letters that don't sound copied

The prompt that works: one paragraph on why this company, one on the one result you're proudest of, one on what you'd do in the first 90 days. Give the AI your actual result with a number in it. Generic inputs produce generic letters; a real number produces a letter that sounds like you.

3. Interview practice with feedback

Ask the AI to play interviewer for the specific role, ask one question at a time, then grade your answer: what was strong, what was vague, and a tighter rewrite. Practicing out loud with feedback beats reading sample answers — interviews are performance, not reading comprehension.

4. Salary negotiation prep

Before any offer conversation, prompt for the market range for the role in your city, then for three responses to a low offer: one that asks for more base, one that trades base for bonus or time off, and one that walks away politely. Walking in with a plan is the whole negotiation.

The rule for all of it

AI drafts, you decide — and you verify. Every fact in a resume or cover letter must be true and yours. The AI's job is to make your real experience read clearly, not to invent a better candidate.
